Foundation Board Member and First Vice President Dr. James Taylor was on hand in Vellore in mid-January for some big developments at Christian Medical College. They included launching of new laboratories, groundbreaking for the new pharmacy college, and expansion of housing facilities. The details, with pictures, are in the CMC Newsletter.

The first Scudders to Hawaii grew up in India in the 1860s and 70s. As children of the second generation of American Scudder Protestant missionaries in British India, their parents were doctors and teachers offering alternatives to the Hindu caste system and Islamic fundamentalism with the teachings of Jesus. In a boon to the poor, the 150 year old, Ranipet based Scudder Memorial hospital has volunteered to provide free cleft lip/palate surgery through its comprehensive cleft treatment center attached to the department of dental and maxillofacial surgery, according to hospital superintendent Dr U Suresh Rao.

For over 200 years the Scudders have provided direct medical care and comfort to the peoples of India. For over 100 years Scudder families have provided financial support to those medical services through the philanthropic efforts of the Scudder Association Foundation. It is a tradition we have quietly continued. However, not since the turbulent period of Indian Independence in the 1940’s, has the work begun by the Scudders and continued by the thousands of graduates of the CMC Vellore and Scudder Memorial Hospital medical programs come under a graver threat to the welfare of the communities they serve, than now.
