John Scudder’s first mission to India and Ceylon in 1819 was the beginning of 1,100 combined years of medical missionary service there by 42 members of 4 generations of the Scudders in India. The Scudder Association was founded to support and promote the medical mission work in India.

Christian Medical College and Hospital, Vellore (CMC)
is an educational and research institution and a tertiary care hospital located at Vellore , Tamil Nadu , India . It is most prominent and well known medical destinations in India, having reputations nationally and internationally. It is also one of the top-ranked medical colleges in India.
Founded in 1900 by an American missionary, Dr Ida S. Scudder, the institution has made significant medical achievements in India. CMC was the first college of nursing in India (1978) and one of the first reconstructive surgery for leprosy in the world (1948). CMC doctors performed the first successful open heart surgery in India (1961), the first kidney transplant in India (1971), the first bone marrow transplantation (1986) and the first successful incompatible kidney transplant (2009).
Vellore CMC Foundation was started by the Scudder Association as a funding mechanism and over the years has grown exponentially due to the enormous financial and spiritual support of the medical school’s alumni as well as the dedicated support the hospital staff and administration.

Scudder Memorial Hospital – Ranipet, India
From 1886 when the founder, Dr. Silas Scudder started SMH, to the present day, SMH has been growing both in numbers and services rendered to the people.
Today, SMH serves over 150 inpatients and 250 outpatients daily, with over 8 wards, 15 clinics each day and 20 other departments or sections.
As a teaching institution SMH trains Nurses and Allied Health (X-Ray, Laboratory, Medical Records) workers with a high degree of technical competence to serve with love and compassion in the spirit of Christ.
